Bone Graft Surgery Treatment Process

STAGE 1: Comprehensive Consultation: Your dentist will conduct a detailed examination of your oral condition and it may include the following:

  • Comprehensive dental examination and explanation of findings
  • Soft tissue and gum check
  • Bite Analysis
  • A discussion about your dental concerns, goals and desires
  • A series of dental photographs or X-rays
  • Discussion of alternative treatment options
  • An opportunity to ask a dentist any questions you may have about our treatments
  • Habits (e.g. smoking and grinding)
  • History of the bone loss
  • A treatment plan

Your dentist may also take photos of your teeth and discuss your suitability for bone grafting and dental implant. Our philosophy is for both our dentist and you to have a detailed understanding of the situation so that you can make the right decision for yourself.

STAGE 2: 3D Intraoral Scanning + 3D X-ray:

A 3D CBCT X-ray may be taken during this time to assess the structures such as the sinus cavity, bone thickness, proximity of the neighbouring teeth and roots, which would aid in the treatment planning and improve the surgical outcome.

A 3D Scan of your mouth may be taken as well, to create digital models of your teeth for further surgical planning.

STAGE 3: Bone Graft Surgery: The procedure for placing a bone graft usually requires only local anaesthesia. If extraction is necessary, the tooth will be extracted first. Once the area is cleaned and prepared for the bone, the bone grafting material will be gently packed into place. There are times when a collagen membrane will be placed to help the bone graft integrate better. The gum will be stitched up and the area will be washed with saline. You will be given post-care instructions and medication.

Types of graft material: Some bone graft and membrane material commonly used are derived from human or other mammal sources. These grafts are thoroughly purified by different means to be free from contaminants. Signing this consent form gives your approval for the doctor to use such materials according to their knowledge and clinical judgment for your situation.

STAGE 4: Review and Check: Our team will contact you a day after your surgery to check on your well-being. After two weeks, the stitches will be removed and ideally, 2 to 3 months later another scan will be done to check healing and bone integration.
