After the Gingivectomy and Crown Lengthening treatment, you can expect a smooth recovery process. Most patients are able to go out and about on the same day. Here are some post-operative care guidelines:
- Swelling and Discomfort: It's normal to experience some swelling and discomfort after the procedure. Apply ice packs to the outside of your face for the first 24 hours to reduce swelling. Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, can help manage discomfort.
- Prescribed Medications: Take any prescribed antibiotics or pain medications as directed by your dentist. Follow the recommended dosage and complete the full course of antibiotics, even if you feel better before finishing them.
- Avoid Smoking and Alcohol: Refrain from smoking and consuming alcohol for at least 7-10 days, as they can impede the healing process and increase the risk of infection. To ensure the best post-operative recovery and results, refrain from smoking as long as possible after the procedure.
- Diet: Stick to a soft diet for the first few days after the procedure to avoid placing excessive pressure on the surgical site. Opt for foods that are easy to chew and won't irritate the gums. Additionally, avoid spicy or extremely hot foods that may irritate the surgical site.
- Oral Hygiene: Maintain excellent oral hygiene to prevent infection and promote healing. Brush your teeth gently with a soft-bristle toothbrush, avoiding the surgical area. Rinse your mouth with warm salt water as directed by your dentist to reduce bacteria and inflammation.
- Mouth Rinse: Use any prescribed antimicrobial or medicated mouthwash as instructed by your dentist. This will help maintain oral hygiene and reduce the risk of infection.
- Avoid Irritants: Avoid using straws, as the suction motion can disrupt the healing process.
- Avoid Strenuous Activities: Refrain from engaging in strenuous physical activities for a few days after the procedure to prevent bleeding and ensure a smooth recovery. If you have stitches, avoid strenuous physical activity for the first 48 to 72 hours.
- Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, which is essential for the healing process.
- Report Any Issues: If you experience severe pain, excessive bleeding, signs of infection (such as fever, swelling, or pus), or have any concerns during the healing process, contact your dentist promptly.
- Follow-Up Appointments: Attend all scheduled follow-up appointments with your dentist or periodontist. They will monitor your healing progress, remove any sutures if necessary, and provide further guidance on oral care.
