LANAP Risks and Complications

Procedural and Post Procedural Risks

All types of dental treatment is associated with some risks. Each individual and their conditions are unique and as there is no predictable way to determine the healing and the gum response or pain response of an individual. Complications that may result from LANAP and anaesthetics include but are not limited to:

  • Adverse reactions to the anaesthetic, drugs, medications
  • Bleeding risk: Some bleeding during and immediately after the procedure is normal, especially in areas with extensive gum disease. The dentist may use sutures to control the bleeding and you may experience light bleeding for a short period post-surgery.
  • Pain or Discomfort: While the area is numbed during the procedure, some patients may experience mild discomfort or soreness once the anesthesia wears off. Pain relievers can help manage any discomfort.
  • Infection: As with any surgery, there is a small risk of infection. The dentist may prescribe antibiotics to reduce this risk and patients should follow all post-operative care instructions closely to prevent complications.
  • Swelling and Inflammation: Swelling of the gums and surrounding tissues is a common post-surgical side effect. This usually subsides after a few days and can be managed with ice packs and anti-inflammatory medication.
  • Gum Recession: In some cases, patients may experience gum recession, where the gums pull away from the teeth, exposing more of the tooth root. This can lead to increased sensitivity to hot or cold and may affect the appearance of the smile.
  • Tooth Sensitivity: After the root surfaces are cleaned and exposed, patients may notice increased sensitivity to temperature or pressure. This sensitivity is usually temporary and should diminish as the gums heal.
  • Delayed Healing: Factors such as smoking, diabetes or poor oral hygiene can slow the healing process. Patients with these conditions should take extra care during recovery and follow their dentist's recommendations closely.
  • Other standard complications include, pain, bleeding, bruising, swelling.
