Periodontal debridement with a surgical flap is a procedure for treating advanced gum disease (periodontitis). In severe cases, gums retract from teeth, creating deep pockets that harbor bacteria and plaque, worsening infection and damaging surrounding bone and tissue.
Non-surgical treatments like scaling and root planing are the first line of therapy for gum disease. However, in severe cases, deep pockets may necessitate a surgical flap for periodontal debridement, enabling thorough cleaning of root surfaces and removal of infected tissue.
The goal is to stop the progression of gum disease, preserve teeth and supporting structures, and promote long-term oral health.
