These instructions are essential for a smooth and comfortable recovery after the sinus lift surgery. Follow them diligently to ensure optimal healing and minimize complications.
POST SURGERY CARE
- Gauze Pack: Keep the gauze pack in place with firm pressure over the area of the sinus graft for 30-60 minutes. Slight bleeding and redness in saliva are common. If excessive bleeding continues, replace with new gauze and bite firmly again. Avoid excessive talking, drinking from a straw, or excessive chewing if there is continued bleeding. Contact the clinic immediately if you feel that the bleeding does not stop.
- Mouth Rinsing: Avoid vigorous mouth rinsing as it may affect the bone graft and stitches.
- Diet: A liquid or soft diet is recommended for the first 24 hours. Avoid using straws and consuming hard or spicy foods.
- Pain Medication: Take prescribed pain medication before the local anesthesia wears off.
- Anti-Inflammatory Medications: If prescribed, follow the instructions for anti-inflammatory medications.
- Rest: Restrict activities on the day of surgery and gradually return to normal activities after 3-4 days.
- Ice Packs: Swelling is expected and usually reaches its peak 2–3 days after surgery. Apply ice packs for 20–30 minutes at a time, on the outside of the face near the surgical area for the first 24 hours to reduce swelling.
- Avoid sneezing: Try to avoid blowing your nose or sneezing as it may affect the bone graft in the sinus cavity. Over the counter decongestant or anti histamine may help, or contact your doctor if you are unsure about the medication.
- Avoid drinking from a straw: The pressure caused by drinking through a straw may affect the sinus lift site.
- Position: Sit upright rather than lying flat on the first day to reduce swelling.
- Avoid Smoking: Smoking can inhibit the healing process and can cause more pain after surgery. To ensure the best post-operative recovery, refrain from smoking as long as possible after sinus grafting surgery.
