Sinus Lift Surgery Risks and Complications

  1. Infection: There is a risk of infection at the surgical site. This can be managed with antibiotics, but in rare cases, severe infections may require additional treatments or hospitalization.
  2. Swelling: Swelling of the face and cheeks is common after surgery and should subside within a few days. Ice packs and prescribed medications can help manage swelling.
  3. Bleeding: Mild bleeding from the nose or mouth may occur. Gauze will be provided to control bleeding, but if it persists, further intervention may be necessary.
  4. Pain and Discomfort: Patients may experience pain and discomfort after the procedure. Pain management medications will be prescribed as needed.
  5. Bruising: After sinus grafting surgery, some patients may notice bruising or discoloration around the areas of surgery, and in cases of an external sinus lift, bruising around the undereye area and the cheek is common. This is normal postoperatively and can take several days to subside.
  6. Jaw Tightness or Limited Mouth Opening After Sinus Grafting: This can happen following sinus grafting surgery and will improve and resolve over time. If this happens, please inform us. You may be shown jaw exercises to help increase your jaw opening.
  7. Sinus Complications: While rare, complications involving the sinus cavity can occur, including sinusitis (sinus infection) or sinus perforation. Additional treatment with a specialist may be required if these complications arise.
  8. Graft Failure: There is a possibility that the bone graft material may not integrate successfully with your existing bone. This may require a revision surgery.
  9. Nerve Damage: There is a slight risk of temporary or permanent damage to nearby nerves, which can result in altered sensation or numbness in the mouth or face.
  10. Tooth Damage: Adjacent teeth may be at risk of damage during the procedure, although this is uncommon.
  11. Graft Material Extrusion: In rare cases, the graft material may become exposed or extrude through the surgical site. This may necessitate further treatment.
  12. Allergic Reactions: Although rare, some patients may experience allergicreactions to anesthesia, medications, or graft materials used during the procedure.
  13. Failure to Achieve Desired Outcome: Despite the best efforts, there is no guarantee of achieving the desired outcome, such as successful bone regeneration or dental implant placement thereafter.
