Holistic Dentistry
What is Holistic Dentistry?
Holistic dentistry, also known as biological or integrative dentistry, is a unique approach to dental care that prioritises the overall health and well-being of the patient.Holistic dentistry is a patient-centered approach that considers the entirety of an individual's health, rather than focusing solely on their teeth and gums. It considers how your oral health is connected to your overall well-being.
This approach means that your dentist will not only focus on fixing dental problems but also consider how these issues may be related to other health issues in your body. They may use treatments and techniques that are different from traditional dentistry to promote not just a healthy smile, but a healthy body too.
By recognising these connections, holistic dentists aim to address the root causes of oral health issues, rather than just treating the symptoms. They may collaborate with other healthcare providers to provide comprehensive care that considers the patient's overall health and lifestyle factors.
In this holistic approach, the mouth is seen as a window to the rest of the body, reflecting its internal state.
Signs and symptoms in the mouth, such as inflammation, gum disease or infections can indicate underlying health issues in other parts of the body.
For example, gum disease has been linked to an increased risk of heart disease and diabetes.
Kane SF. The effects of oral health on systemic health. Gen Dent. 2017 Nov-Dec;65(6):30-34. PMID: 29099363.
How is Dental Health Linked to Overall Well-being?
Some systemic conditions, such as diabetes, can increase the risk of gum disease. Conversely, gum disease can make it harder to control blood sugar levels in people with diabetes, highlighting the importance of maintaining good oral health.
Oral diseases such as cavities, gum disease, and infections can have significant impacts on general health, contributing to conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and even complications in pregnancy.
How Do We Integrate Holistic Dentistry At Dental Designs?
Holistic dentistry is an approach to dental care that focuses on the interconnection between oral health and overall well-being by combining modern technology, like digital X-rays, we aim to provide care that aligns with the body's natural processes. At Dental Designs, we provide:
Minimally Invasive Techniques
Minimally invasive techniques are all about preserving as much of the natural tooth structure as possible while still effectively treating dental issues.
For example, in the case of a cavity, we remove only the decayed part of the tooth and fill it with a mercury-free filling material. This preserves more of the healthy tooth structure compared to traditional methods, which might require a larger portion of the tooth to be removed.
Biologically Compatible Materials
Biologically compatible materials are those that are specifically chosen for their ability to interact effectively with the body's tissues without causing any harmful reactions.
One example is dental implants made from titanium. Titanium is known to integrate well with the surrounding bone tissue without triggering an immune response, hence allowing for the successful fusion of the implant with the jaw bone.
Focus on Preventive Care
Holistic dentistry focuses heavily on preventive measures to avoid dental issues.
Besides regular cleanings and dental examinations, we educate patients on lifestyle changes that promote oral health such as dietary adjustments, stress management and proper oral hygiene. This emphasis aims to reduce the need for invasive treatments in the future.
Patient Education
We believe in empowering our patients with knowledge about their oral health.
Education about the importance of diet and proper oral hygiene practices is crucial for maintaining good oral health. This knowledge enables patients to take an active role in their oral health care and make informed decisions about treatment options.
Holistic dentistry goes beyond fixing dental issues, it focuses on nurturing the entire body.

Need for bone grafting and other surgical procedures like sinus lift and nerve repositioning
Treatment timeline
Traditional Implants
Requires one implant for each missing tooth
Implants have to be placed where the individual tooth is missing
Align with adjacent teeth and supporting bone
High probability, especially if sufficient bone is not present to support the implant, or vital structures like nerves and sinus membrane are in close proximity
Have to wait for a healing period of 3-6 months before artificial teeth can be placed
All-on-4 Implants
Requires 4 implants to replace an entire jaw of missing teeth
Implants are strategically placed in areas of jawbone with the highest bone density

This clinic is one of the best I have ever seen. I saw dr Justin for my implant which I did many years ago, the tooth was loose, and other drs told me to remove it as they could not find out what brand it was but dr Justin was able to take 3d xrays and locate the brand and specially ordered the part in. he saved me from having to do a surgery to remove and put a new implant which would have cost me a bomb. the tooth looks even better than the original thanks to the experieced dental technician Katsuya from Japan.
Very happy and will keep coming back for my regular dental.

my workplace is close by and I had a problem with my tooth for a few days, so I made an appointment to come down. The receptionist who booked my appointment was very helpful and friendly to explain the way to the clinic from my office. I saw Dr Nicholas who was able to do a root canal treatment on the same visit so that I didn't need to come back. I felt safe and comfortable to do my dental treatment here as the dental picks are all wrapped up and sterilized and only opened before each treatment when im inside.
