What is LANAP Gum Disease Treatment?

LANAP, short for Laser-Assisted New Attachment Procedure, is a treatment for gum diseases such as gingivitis and periodontitis, using laser.

According to a nationwide oral health survey conducted by the Health Promotion Board in 2003, 85% of adults in Singapore suffered from mild to moderately severe forms of gum disease. LANAP is effective in treating gum diseases by using a special laser to remove infected gum tissue and bacteria around the teeth without harming any healthy gum tissue.

LANAP: Is it right for you?

Determining if LANAP is the right treatment for you depends on several factors. It is best to schedule a consultation with our dentist who can evaluate your specific case. After a thorough assessment, your dentist can discuss whether LANAP is a suitable option for you or if alternative treatments would be more appropriate.

LANAP may be beneficial for individuals with advanced gum pockets or persistent infections despite prior gum treatments. Signs of gum disease include:

  • Gums that bleed easily and is red, swollen or tender
  • Gums that have pulled away from the teeth, making the teeth appear longer
  • Persistent bad breath or a bad taste in the mouth
  • Loose or separating teeth
  • Changes in your bite or the way your teeth fit together
  • Presence of pus between teeth and gums

At Dental Designs, we utilise modern dental equipment such as Biolase Waterlase Laser. The tip of the laser is carefully positioned between the gum and teeth, emitting short pulses of light. When the light touches tissue and cells infected by bacteria, it generates heat. This heat serves several purposes, including:

Frame 733 (9)

Removes diseased tissue

  • Selectively removes diseased tissue while leaving healthy tissue intact.
  • Kills any remaining germs inside the depths of gum pockets.

Frame 732 (29)

Aids in detecting tartar

  • Alerts the dentist to the presence of tartar on the tooth roots, which can then be removed using ultrasonic root cleaners.

Frame 732 (30)

Creates a protective seal

  • Creates a sticky fibrin clot that connects the gum to the root surface, effectively sealing the pocket.
  • This prevents bacteria and food debris from entering the wound site, creating a clean and stable environment for healing and the regrowth of gum tissues.

Benefits of LANAP Gum Disease Treatment

aesdwa
As LANAP is a minimally invasive procedure, patients experience reduced discomfort and a faster recovery period, as compared to traditional gum surgery. Most patients have little or no down time.
LANAP targets diseased tissue specifically, leaving healthy gum tissue unharmed.
The laser used in LANAP seals off blood vessels, resulting in less bleeding during and after the procedure.

LANAP has a track record of successfully preserving natural teeth and dental implants, even in cases where traditional treatments have failed.

By addressing gum disease and promoting tissue regrowth, LANAP helps to maintain the overall health of teeth and surrounding structures.

What are the Differences between Traditional Gum Surgery & LANAP?

Traditional gum surgery and LANAP are both effective treatment options for gum disease. While LANAP may not fully replace the need for traditional gum surgery in every case, it can serve as a beneficial addition to gum disease treatment.

Traditional Gum Surgery
LANAP Gum Disease Treatment
Procedure Invasive, requires cutting into gums Minimally invasive, no cutting
Tissue Removal  Removes diseased and healthy tissues Targets only diseased tissues
Pain and Discomfort Significant Minimal to none
Bleeding Significant Minimal
Risk of Gum Loss May cause some gum loss Less likely to cause gum loss
Healing Time Longer Shorter

2. LANAP Procedure

LANAP is typically completed in two dental visits, with each visit focusing on one side of the mouth. The procedure includes several key steps:

Laser Gum Therapy - Our dentist will use a specialised laser to specifically target and remove infected gum tissue, while preserving the healthy tissue.

Gum Pocket Disinfection - The laser will also be used to eliminate bacteria deep within the gum pockets.

Root Surface Cleaning - Following the removal of diseased tissue, ultrasonic root cleaners will be used to eliminate any remaining tartar from the root surfaces.

Gum Tissue Stimulation - The laser will then be used to stimulate the tissues in the treated area, promoting the formation of a seal to prevent re-infection and facilitate healing.

3. Post-Operative Care

After undergoing LANAP, it is essential to prioritise long-term oral health care to ensure the success of the treatment. This involves following the post-treatment instructions provided by your dentist, which may include specific guidelines for oral hygiene, diet and medication use.

You may experience mild discomfort or swelling after LANAP but these symptoms can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain medication and should improve as you heal.

Your dentist may also make adjustments to your bite to ensure that your teeth align properly and in some cases, your dentist may recommend the use of splints to stabilize your teeth following LANAP.

4. Review Checks

Attending regular follow-up appointments is crucial, as it allows your dentist to monitor your progress and check for any signs of infection or complications.

The dentist will examine your gums and teeth to look for signs of healing and to ensure that there are no complications. They may also take X-rays or use other diagnostic tools to get a clearer picture of the healing process.

These appointments are important for ensuring that your gums heal properly and that the results of the LANAP procedure are maintained over time.

This clinic is one of the best I have ever seen. I saw dr Justin for my implant which I did many years ago, the tooth was loose, and other drs told me to remove it as they could not find out what brand it was but dr Justin was able to take 3d xrays and locate the brand and specially ordered the part in. he saved me from having to do a surgery to remove and put a new implant which would have cost me a bomb. the tooth looks even better than the original thanks to the experieced dental technician Katsuya from Japan.

Very happy and will keep coming back for my regular dental.

my workplace is close by and I had a problem with my tooth for a few days, so I made an appointment to come down. The receptionist who booked my appointment was very helpful and friendly to explain the way to the clinic from my office. I saw Dr Nicholas who was able to do a root canal treatment on the same visit so that I didn't need to come back. I felt safe and comfortable to do my dental treatment here as the dental picks are all wrapped up and sterilized and only opened before each treatment when im inside.

Frequently Asked Questions About LANAP Gum Disease Treatment In Singapore

Gum disease is primarily caused by plaque, that is a sticky film of bacteria that constantly forms on teeth. Plaque contains harmful bacteria that can irritate the gums, leading to inflammation. If not removed through proper oral hygiene practices such as brushing and flossing, plaque can harden into tartar, which can further irritate the gums and lead to gum disease.

Overtime, your gums may start to pull away from your teeth, forming pockets and infection. This infection can break down the bone and tissue that keep your teeth in place, eventually causing them to become loose and possibly fall out. Gum disease is the primary reason for tooth loss in adults.

Other factors that can contribute to gum disease include smoking, hormonal changes, certain medications, diabetes, and genetic predisposition.

After LANAP surgery, you may experience some bleeding, swelling or pain but these symptoms are typically minimal compared to traditional gum surgery. Depending on your surgeon's advice, you may need to follow a modified diet and specific oral hygiene practices to allow the gums to heal.

Unlike traditional gum surgery, LANAP typically allows for a quicker recovery, with most patients able to return to normal activities almost immediately. While there may be some sensitivity, over-the-counter pain medication is usually sufficient to reduce any discomfort.

LANAP significantly improves your dental health by reducing bleeding, swelling and gum pocket depths. It eliminates infection and stimulates the body's natural healing process.

Following LANAP, many patients notice improved chewing ability. Moreover, maintaining oral hygiene at home becomes easier due to shallower gum pockets, potentially leading to reduced bad breath and tooth sensitivity. This effect is particularly significant when coupled with consistent ongoing care, as it can substantially extend the lifespan of your teeth.

Alternatives to LANAP for treating gum disease include:

a) Scaling and Root Planing - This is a non-surgical procedure that involves deep cleaning of the teeth and roots to remove plaque and tartar from below the gumline.

b) Traditional Gum Surgery - Also known as flap surgery, this involves lifting the gums to remove tartar and bacteria, and then suturing them back in place.

The best treatment option will depend on the severity of your gum disease and your individual oral health needs. It's important to consult with your dentist to determine the most appropriate treatment plan for you.

LANAP gum disease treatment is known for its minimal discomfort compared to traditional gum surgery. The procedure is designed to prioritise patient comfort, starting with the use of a local anaesthetic to ensure the treatment area is numb and you feel no pain during the procedure. The laser used emits a mild, warm sensation that many patients find soothing rather than painful.

After the procedure, you may experience some mild discomfort or soreness, which is common as the gums heal. However, this discomfort is usually manageable with over-the-counter pain medication. One of the benefits of LANAP is its quick recovery time, allowing you to resume normal activities faster than with traditional gum surgery.

Overall, LANAP offers a comfortable experience for patients, with minimal pain or discomfort reported by most individuals. If you have any concerns about pain or discomfort during the procedure, be sure to discuss them with your dentist beforehand.

The duration of LANAP gum disease treatment can vary based on the extent of gum disease and the number of teeth involved. Typically, LANAP is completed in one to two sessions, with one side of your mouth treated per visit. Each appointment lasts about 2-3 hours.

During the procedure, a laser is used to remove bacteria and infected tissue from the gums and stimulate the growth of healthy tissue. The laser also helps seal the gums, reducing infection risk and promoting faster healing. Following LANAP, you'll need follow-up appointments to monitor gum healing.
