What Are Dental Crowns?
A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that fits over a tooth that is damaged, weak, or decayed. Each crown is custom-made for a snug fit, and follows the natural contours of teeth, so it sits comfortably and bites evenly.
Dental crowns help to reinforce the tooth while restoring its function and appearance. At Dental Designs Clinic, the crowns are fabricated onsite at our in-house lab using a fully digital workflow for patient comfort. This also allows for quality control as well as faster turnaround times, including the option of Same Day Crowns.
Our dental crowns are 100% metal-free as they are made from ceramic materials, making the crown durable and biocompatible as well as natural-looking.
Why Do Teeth Need Dental Crowns?
Dental crowns are one of the common ways to restore a tooth that has been damaged or weakened.
A crown is a cap that fits over a natural tooth or over a dental implant, bringing back both its strength and its look.
Your tooth may benefit from a crown if it is:
- A tooth with a large filling, decay, or a cavity
- A tooth that is cracked or chipped
- A tooth that has had root canal treatment
- A tooth with an unusual shape or colour compared to the teeth around it
A crown also protects the tooth from further wear and cracking, which, if left untreated, can sometimes lead to losing the tooth.
Benefits Of A Dental Crown
Once tooth enamel is worn away, it won't grow back. If your tooth has been weakened, cracked, or damaged, a crown is often an effective way to protect the remaining tooth structures.
A crown supports and protects the natural tooth, reducing the risk of further decay or damage to the structures underneath.
Think of a crown like a helmet for a weak tooth; it protects teeth that are damaged or sensitive.
It helps to restore the tooth so you can bite and chew comfortably again without worrying about pain or sensitivity.
Crowns don't just restore function, they are also made to follow the contours of natural teeth, and shade-matched to the surrounding teeth.
Porcelain crowns do not contain metal. They can be made to closely mimic natural tooth enamel. They're a good option for a tooth that is discoloured or mis-shaped.
A crown stays firmly in place as they are bonded to the tooth. Whether it's for a front tooth or a back tooth, your crown is custom-made to fit, so you can eat and speak with confidence.
With proper care and maintenance, a crown can last from 10 to 15 years. Permanent crowns are tough and stand up well to everyday biting and chewing, providing long-term protection.

Zirconia crowns are known for being strong and long-lasting. Made from a tough ceramic called zirconium oxide, they stand up very well to wear and fractures.
They are also 100% metal-free. They can be used for both front and back teeth, with a natural look and feel.
Zirconia crowns are fabricated in our in-house lab.
Porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) crowns combine the strength of metal with the natural look of porcelain. A metal base adds durability, while the porcelain surface keeps things looking natural.
PFM crowns are versatile and suit both front and back teeth, offering reliable performance and a natural-looking smile.
Full metal crowns, also called gold or metal alloy crowns, are known for their strength and long life. They're made from metal alloys such as gold, palladium, or nickel-chromium, which makes them very durable and resistant to wear.
These crowns are often recommended for back teeth, where biting and chewing forces are strongest, giving long-lasting protection and function.

Same Day/Next Day Crowns
At Dental Designs Clinic, our dental crowns are fabricated in our in-house lab. We use a fully digital CAD/CAM system for the entire process, from start to finish, which means we can prepare and make your crown on the same day or the very next day.
Unlike traditional crowns, this skips the long waits, the temporary crowns, and the back-and-forth of multiple visits. This technology provides strong crowns that blend right in with natural teeth.
The dental crowns are also wonderfully versatile. They can restore worn or misshapen teeth and cover dental implants. Whether it's a front tooth or a back tooth, your crown is made to match the teeth around it for a natural result.

How Are Dental Crowns Different At
Dental Designs Clinic?
Fully digital workflow with CAD/CAM
We make all our crowns in our in-house lab, so we stay in full control of the quality.
The whole process is digital. We start with a small intraoral scanner that takes detailed images of your teeth, unlike traditional impression materials that can be messy and uncomfortable.
High-quality, genuine materials used
We source our materials from Europe and Japan, so the quality stays consistent.
Each crown is made one of two ways: either gently milled from a single block of ceramic (a careful method that reduces tiny cracks) or pressed in a mould under heat and pressure to create a thin, aesthetic crown.
Experienced dentists
Our dentists work hand in hand with our ceramists to incorporate the right balance of aesthetics and function in every crown. This helps your smile stay comfortable and healthy for years before your next visit.
100% metal-free dental crowns
All of our crowns are completely metal-free for a natural look. They're also biocompatible, which lowers the chance of irritation or allergic reactions that can sometimes happen with crowns that contain metal.

Process of Getting a Dental Crown with Dental Designs in Singapore
1. Consultation
During your consultation, the dentist will assess the condition of your tooth. This is done to evaluate the extent of damage or decay, check the health of the nerve, and confirm whether a dental crown is the right fit for you.
We may take dental X-rays to spot any underlying issues and to gain a complete understanding of your dental health.
2. Preparing Your Teeth
The dentist will remove any decay and, if needed, restore the tooth with a filling.
The tooth will then be reshaped to accommodate for the crown. This requires shaving off a thin layer of the tooth circumferentially. This is an irreversible step.
After the preparation, a digital impression is then taken and the scan goes straight to our in-house lab, where the crown is designed and made on the same day (where applicable).
3. Designing Your Crown
We use modern dental technology such as CAD/CAM (Computer-Aided Design and Computer-Aided Manufacturing) to design and create the main structure of your crown. Digital technology reduces errors and ensures the crown will fit your tooth with precision.
Once the design is ready, the software sends it to a milling machine to make the crown.
4. Milling And Hand Finishing The Crown
In our in-house lab, each ceramic crown is milled from a single block of material using diamond drills, for an accurate fit.
Our experienced technicians then hand-finish the crowns, adding glazes and the final touches for a natural look.
Finally, the crown is strengthened, and the colour is set permanently in a furnace at 1550°C.
5. Crown Cementation
Once the crown is ready, your dentist will try it on your tooth to make sure it fits well and blends in with the rest of your teeth.
Once everything looks good, the crown is cleaned, conditioned, and permanently bonded onto your tooth.
6. Review Check
We'll see you again about a week later for a follow-up. At this review, the dentist will check your bite, make sure the crown is stable and comfortable.
Our goal is for the crown to feel natural in your mouth. Since everyone's bite is a little different, minor adjustments may be required to get it feeling just right.
Cost of Dental Crowns in Singapore
At Dental Designs Clinic, we provide metal-free crowns made from ceramic and zirconia. Our materials come from Europe and Japan and have been thoroughly tested to be durable while closely matching the look of a natural tooth.
Our in-house lab works closely with your dentist to create durable crowns that look and feel natural, with a quick turnaround for your convenience, and without cutting corners on quality. The price of a crown can vary depending on the material used and whether any extra services are needed.
Depending on the case, there are add-on options to further customise your dental crown for function or aesthetics:
1. Pressed (add-on for ceramic crowns only): Pressed crowns are made by pressing high-strength ceramic into a mould to form the shape of the crown. Pressed crowns can be made in thinner sections and give optimal fit.
2. Layered (add-on available for all types): Our technicians hand-sculpt several layers of ceramic to create dental crowns with life-like aesthetics, replicating the natural translucency and colour of real teeth. This works especially well for front teeth and any tooth on show in your smile.

This clinic is one of the best I have ever seen. I saw dr Justin for my implant which I did many years ago, the tooth was loose, and other drs told me to remove it as they could not find out what brand it was but dr Justin was able to take 3d xrays and locate the brand and specially ordered the part in. he saved me from having to do a surgery to remove and put a new implant which would have cost me a bomb. the tooth looks even better than the original thanks to the experieced dental technician Katsuya from Japan.
Very happy and will keep coming back for my regular dental.

my workplace is close by and I had a problem with my tooth for a few days, so I made an appointment to come down. The receptionist who booked my appointment was very helpful and friendly to explain the way to the clinic from my office. I saw Dr Nicholas who was able to do a root canal treatment on the same visit so that I didn't need to come back. I felt safe and comfortable to do my dental treatment here as the dental picks are all wrapped up and sterilized and only opened before each treatment when im inside.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Crowns In Singapore
A dental crown is a tooth-shaped "cap" that fits over a tooth to restore its shape, size, and strength, and to improve how it looks.
It's usually made from strong materials such as ceramic or metal. Once cemented in place, the crown fully covers the part of the tooth you can see at and above the gum line.
The main job of a crown is to cover and protect a damaged tooth. So if you've had a root canal or a very large cavity, your dentist may suggest a crown to protect the tooth that's left.
You may also need a crown as part of a dental bridge or with a dental implant.
With our same day crown, the process is simple and streamlined:
Morning Appointment:
First, we examine your tooth, sometimes including X-rays. If there's more extensive damage or not enough natural tooth left, we may suggest additional treatment.
Then comes the CAD/CAM CEREC procedure:
- Local anaesthesia to keep you comfortable
- Removal of decay and old fillings
- Reinforcing the tooth with a strong filling material and creating space for the crown
- A 3D digital scan using a scanner
In Between Appointments: You're free to head out for lunch or pop back to work.
Our in-house lab technicians design your crown using computer technology. The crown is then milled from porcelain, usually within a day and glazed and fired in our in-house lab.
Afternoon Appointment:
You will have to come back for a second visit on the same day for the final fitting. The dentist will try the crown on, check the fit, make any small adjustments, and then permanently bond it in place.
Unlike traditional crowns that need several appointments and temporary covers in between, our same day process is quicker and convenient.
1) Metal-Free Crowns
All-ceramic or all-porcelain crowns are made from high-strength ceramic. They match your natural tooth colour and are biocompatible.
One advantage of ceramic crowns is that they often require less removal of the natural tooth structure, as compared to Porcelain-Fused-To-Metal (PFM) crowns. They work well for both front and back teeth.
Zirconia crowns are made from a strong white material called zirconium oxide. They come in multiple types, such as solid zirconia and high-translucent zirconia.
Solid zirconia suits back teeth that take a lot of pressure, while high-translucent zirconia gives a more natural look.
At our clinic, we provide metal-free crowns, as they offer natural looks, minimal removal of tooth structure, hypoallergenic properties, durability and strength, and the versatility for a beautiful smile.
2) Metal-Containing Crowns
Metal crowns can be made from gold alloy, other alloys like palladium, or a base-metal alloy such as nickel or chromium. Metal crowns may require less tooth trimming while Porcelain-Fused-To-Metal (PFM) crowns require more tooth trimming.
The downside is that they have a metallic colour, which does not blend with natural tooth colour. Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns have a metal interior with a porcelain layer for a more natural look, but the porcelain can chip or wear over time. These crowns are usually more affordable.
On average, crowns last between 5 and 10 years. How long yours lasts depends on the wear and tear it takes, how well you look after your teeth, and your everyday habits.
It helps to avoid grinding or clenching your teeth, chewing ice, biting your nails, and using your teeth to open things like bottle caps or packaging.
While a crowned tooth does not require any special care, remember that the underlying tooth is still your natural tooth and is still subject to decay or gum disease. Make sure maintain regular oral hygiene and ensure no food is left stuck between the teeth.
Discomfort or sensitivity. You might feel some sensitivity to hot and cold right after the procedure as the anaesthetic wears off, especially if the tooth is still vital. Your dentist may suggest a toothpaste made for sensitive teeth. This usually settles within a few days. If soreness or sensitivity continues when you bite down, the crown may be sitting a little high. Let your dentist know, and they can adjust it.
Chipped crown. Porcelain and porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns can sometimes chip. A small chip can often be repaired with composite resin while the crown stays in place, though this is usually a temporary fix. A larger chip may mean the crown needs replacing.
Loose crown. Sometimes the cement under a crown washes out. This can let the crown loosen and allow bacteria in, causing decay underneath. If your crown feels loose, contact your dentist.
The crown falls off. A crown can come off if the tooth underneath decays or the cement loosens. If this happens, contact your dentist straight away for advice. They can often re-cement the crown, and if not, a new one can be made.
Allergic reaction. Because all-metal and porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns can contain a mix of metals, an allergic reaction to the metal or porcelain is possible, though it's extremely rare.
Dark line near the gum. A dark line along the gum can appear with a porcelain-fused-to-metal crown, that's simply the metal showing through. It isn't a problem in itself, but if you don't like the look, you can ask to replace it with an all-porcelain or ceramic crown.
Yes, a dental crown and a natural tooth are definitely different. A crown won't stain or change colour the way natural teeth can. Crowns that contain metal, such as porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) crowns can sometimes look a little different or more opaque than your other teeth.
Ceramic crowns, however, can be made to look just like natural teeth.
Onlays and 3/4 crowns are variants of the dental crown. The difference is how much of the tooth they cover.
A traditional crown covers the whole tooth, while onlays and 3/4 crowns cover less of it. Inlays are only suitable when the cavity is smaller than about one-third of the tooth, and they're an alternative to large fillings.
These options tend to have good shape for cleaning, help stop food getting stuck, and last much longer than ordinary fillings.
For smaller areas of decay or fractures, ceramic onlays and inlays may be advised.
If the tooth is badly damaged, a dental crown is needed. The purpose of the crown is to protect the tooth by covering it, and it has to be made of strong enough materials to serve its purpose.
Some people wonder about simply placing a large filling over the tooth instead. This may work in the short term, but because a dental filling material is not rigid enough to hold the tooth together, cracks will continue to progress. This increases the risk of the dental filling breakage as well as cracked tooth.
To improve the smile aesthetics, porcelain veneers, orthodontics (Invisalign or dental braces) and teeth whitening are procedures that can help. For missing teeth, replacement options include a dental bridge, dentures or dental implants.
